the Mekong Institute (MI) welcomed a distinguished delegation from the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ROK MOFA) at its headquarters in Khon Kaen. This visit was pivotal in reinforcing collaborative initiatives under the Mekong-Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund (MKCF), where MI serves as the fund manager, and in deepening mutual understanding between the ROK and the Greater Mekong Subregion.
The delegation, led by Ms. Park Eun-seong, Deputy Director of the Southeast Asia Division II, and Mr. Kim Dong Hoo, Second Secretary of the same division, engaged in fruitful discussions with key MI officials, led by Mr. Madhurjya K. Dutta, Director of the Trade & Investment Facilitation Department.
The discussions focused on the operationalization and impact of the MKCF. Additionally, both sides explored potential collaboration opportunities for 2025, including the MKCF Regional Forum and the Mekong Forum 2025. The delegates also met with representatives from the Project Implementing Agency (PIA) for the Small Scale Water Resource Management Project, known as X-Water. This meeting provided an opportunity for X-Water to present its project interventions and share significant achievements to date.
Following these discussions, the delegation traveled to Mahasarakham Province to visit a project site dedicated to “Enhancing Community and Small-scale Water Resource Management in the Mekong Region.” This on-the-ground experience underscored the practical implications of their collaborative efforts and highlighted the positive impact of MKCF initiatives in local communities.
The visit exemplifies MI’s commitment to fostering partnerships that promote sustainable development and regional cooperation, paving the way for future collaborations that benefit both the ROK and the Greater Mekong Subregion.
