The 2024 Mekong-ROK Senior Officials’ Meeting was held in Vientiane, Lao PDR on June 6th (Thursday). Mr. Madhurjya Kumar Dutta, Director of both the Trade and Investment Facilitation Department and the Mekong-ROK Cooperation Fund Unit at the Mekong Institute, presented some projects implemented with support from the Mekong-ROK Cooperation Fund (MKCF) as MKCF Success Stories.
MKCF Success Story #1:
Project: Guidelines and certification for green buildings in Cambodia (Ministry of Environment)
Duration: 2019 ~ 2024 (Ongoing) Sector: Environment Country: Cambodia
Key Achievements:
Drafted Prakas for the Establishment of the National Committee for Green Building Cambodia
Integrated four articles on green buildings into the draft Environment and Natural Resource Code in November 2022
MKCF Success Story #2:
Project: Soil, Water and Nutrient Management in Drought Zones of Lao PDR (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Lao PDR)
Duration: 2021 ~ 2024 (Completed) Sector: Environment Country: Lao PDR
Key Achievements:
Introduced innovative soil, water, and nutrient management models (Training, Organic tank construction, etc.)
Developed a streamlined process for transferring field-tested technologies into policy briefs and knowledge publications
MKCF Success Story #3:
Project: Capacity Enhancement on Wind Energy Usage for Sustainable Rural Development in Myanmar and Vietnam (Yangon Technological University )
Duration: 2018 ~ 2023 (Completed) Sector: Human Resources Development Country: Myanmar
Key Achievements:
Meteorological literature has been surveyed, and a wind speed map for Myanmar has been developed
Wind turbine components and towers have been constructed, including programming and maintenance guidelines
A curriculum on Wind Energy has been developed, and regional training has been conducted

Project: Circular Economy, Resource and Energy Efficiency for Productivity and Sustainability of Cassava Chain to High-Value Products (National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC)

Achievements:
Cassava Knowledge and technology hub: Established ASEAN Cassava Centre for Knowledge and technology hub
Technological Innovation: The techniques for cassava cultivation, processing technology for cassava starch, and management of cassava waste for biogas production have been developed
MKCF Success Story #5:
Project: Rice Straw-Based Circular Economy for Improved Biodiversity and Sustainability
Duration: 2019 ~ 2024 (Ongoing) Sector: Environment Country: Viet Nam
Achievements:
Conducted baseline survey on rice straw management
Developed and disseminated circular economy model for rice-straw-based businesses
Completed life-cycle analysis and GHG assessments for various rice straw and water management practices
MKCF Success Story #6:
Project: Promotion of Innovative Rainwater For Drinking (RFD) System as a Sustainable Water Supply in Rural Schools (Seoul National University)
Duration: 2022 ~ 2023 (Completed) Sector: Environment Country: ROK
Achievements:
Five RFD systems were successfully established in each of the Mekong Countries
Integrated social innovations through Rain school activities
Promoted water quality with the national standard
Provided Training on Operation and Maintenance of the RFD system
Provided Training on WASH FIT (Water and Sanitation for Health Facility, Improvement Tool) as the risk-based management tool covering key aspects of WASH

Project: Sustainable Smart Tourism Development in the Mekong Region (Mekong Institute)

Achievements:
Higher quality hospitality and tourism services in Mekong countries (Training, Mentoring, Development of Online platforms, etc.)
Enhanced collaboration through establishing sister city relationships between the ROK and Mekong countries.
Developed content and mobile application systems for sustainable tourism development in 5 Mekong countries. Roadshows in CLMTV and 3 investment forums
