Enhancing Community and Small-scale Water Resource Management in the Mekong Region (ECSWRM)

The X-Water Project of Lao PDR selected two research areas, namely Nathong village, Phatang village, and Phahom village in Vangvieng District, Vientiane province.

Vang Vieng is a popular tourist town, attracting thousands of tourists each year. Meanwhile, the recent development of Vang Vieng has seen a diversification of water use and an intensification of agriculture. Therefore, water issues in local areas lead to the question of how to allocate water resources to meet the demands of tourism, urban growth, agriculture, and local livelihoods. Objectives

  • 1. To review and assess the role and capability of local knowledge and small-scale water resource management in dealing with water crisis in lower Mekong countries.
  • 2. To support and equip local leaders, and smallholder farmers, with tools, methods, knowledge and skills related to small-scale water management, through trainings, field visits, and other skill development activities.
  • 3. To advocate small-scale water management to policymakers in lower Mekong countries
